Intel is looking to create a new way to interact with devices and they have partnered with Dell to release the Venue 8 7000 sporting Intel RealSense Snapshot Depth Camera. On top of having some killer next generation camera technology it is also currently the world’s thinnest tablet at 6.0mm.
During this morning’s Intel Developer Forum keynote, Dell CEO Michael Dell and Intel CEO Brian Krzanich will preview a new tablet. What makes this tablet an upgrade on what we currently have on the market is that it comes with the Intel RealSense Snapshot a depth perception camera.
What makes this set up interesting is that the depth cameras are capable of 720p but aren’t mounted on a module which is one of the reasons that Dell and Intel were able to get the tablet so thin. The device manufacture can actually put the cameras anywhere on the tablet allowing for a lot of design flexibility. The cameras that take pictures are the 8MP on the rear is paired with a 2MP on the front.
We got to spend a fair amount of time with the tablet most of which was taking a look at the software that comes with the camera. The 2 secondary cameras pull the depth data and the primary camera provides the information that allows for the awesome effects. Lets start with the coolest feature which is Selective Filter, in the video below you’ll see us turn the photo to black and white and pull the color from the back of the photo or the front allowing you to put color on the background or the features that pop. Selective Focus is like changing the depth of field which is like what you’re used to seeing in some software offerings on other devices or the HTC One M8 which also sports a depth sensor, we have some photos comparing the difference in thickness
A few other camera features include measure measurement, meaning that it can measure the distance of an object or between objects, which came in useful while settling a debate of whether or not a subway sandwich was 12 inches or not. A snow globe mode is included which shows of snow falling on objects, the snow will pile up on the higher objects. And an Augmented Reality feature that can detect the edges of a table and the animated character will pop up from the tablet or stop walking then it reaches the edge.
The Dell Venue 8 7000 is shows what camera technology could be in a tablet, the form factor feels rugged with its metal exterior and snappy operating system. We currently have no official word on pricing an release dates, but rumor has it that we’r looking at an late October/November release with a $399 price point.
